A lot of the jobs you see on our job board require Epic certification. As a result, one of the most common questions we get asked is, “How does one become Epic certified?” That's why we've listed the three most common ways to get certified.
1. Work for a health system that is implementing Epic
Once a health system has decided to implement Epic, they primarily use their current IT and clinical staff to build the different applications within Epic. In order to work within the system, Epic requires that these individuals become certified for the specific application that they will be working with. The certification process for Epic is very unique. Certification can only be obtained at their headquarters in Madison, WI, where you participate in a rigorous training schedule followed by a test. Prior to taking the test, you must also complete a mock build project on Epic’s model system in the module you received training in. Once the project is complete and you pass the test with an 85 or higher, you will receive proof of your certification from Epic.
2. Get hired by a health system who needs your skill set
If you are not currently working for a health system that is implementing Epic, you can still become certified by getting hired on by a health system that has a need for someone with your particular skill set. Do some research online and find out which health systems in your area are installing Epic. If there are not any nearby, work with a trusted recruiter who has relationships with different health systems across the country. They will be able to tell you what positions are available that match your skills. You may have to be flexible in terms of relocation, but the chances of finding a role that fits your skill set is proportionately higher.
3. Work for Epic directly
Epic is one the of the largest and fastest growing EMR systems in the United States. As meaningful use deadlines were decided, health systems across the country began to choose between various EMR technologies, Epic emerged as a clear favorite. As a result, they are expanding their headquarters and actively hiring top talent from a variety of different backgrounds.
