Everyone at HIMSS who shared their #GoesBeyond stories were excited to tell us about the people in their life working hard to make a positive impact. Even in the midst of such enthusiasm, however, Christine Heffernan stood out.
You see, Christine didn’t just tell every person in our booth about her amazing friend Sylvia—she wrote a two page bulleted list of ways Sylvia goes beyond!
Read on to learn how this woman serves her patients, friends, community… and literally, the world.
Christine Heffernan, Industry Value Advisor (Healthcare) at SAP: Sylvia is a Physician's Assistant. She has spent the last three years working at a federally funded clinic serving the underserved population in northwest Washington, DC., where she goes beyond daily! I've never met anyone who cares more about improving outcomes for her patients. She calls, follows up, does everything she can think of to get them excited about getting healthy.
Aside from ensuring her patients' health and wellness, she goes far beyond:
- Sylvia started a Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Prescription (FFVx) program for families with limited income and resources, partnering with local farmers to provide healthy foods (fruits and veggies) at no cost. She also develops programming for the children of those families, aimed at getting them more physically fit. The kids are playing active games, learning about food, nutrition, and activity, while parents get access to healthier food options--a win for everyone!
- She donates her time once a week with a homeless outreach mobile van, bringing medical education and care to the homeless---at night, in every weather--to those who might not otherwise seek it out. She has engaged with these individuals on a level not often attempted, and many become her regular patients at the clinic. This means they learn to better manage their chronic conditions like diabetes, depression, and drug addiction.
- She recently took a position in Saipan, helping the local population on the remote island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean improve their health. She's bringing the FFVx program there!
- Sylvia is an amazing friend, sister, daughter, and aunt! She has been my roommate, friend, travel buddy extraordinaire, and a great inspiration to me. She is the reason I went from thinking about eating healthier to actually doing it.
A big thanks to Christine for highlighting Sylvia's work!
